Founder & Creative Director

A contemporary fashion house built at the intersection of African identity, modern tailoring and intentional design.
Nkem Nwankwo, Founder and Creative Director of Frankincense

A practice shaped by cloth.

Trained in fashion design and shaped by bespoke tailoring, garment construction and creative production, Nkem approaches fashion as both a discipline and a language.

The practice is grounded in proportion, craftsmanship and textile exploration — and in the belief that clothing should carry meaning without demanding attention.

Through Frankincense he leads the creative direction of the house, from concept and research to the final image, bringing African textile traditions and cultural reference together with silhouettes made for modern, international living.

Perspective

Between two worlds.

His design journey has been shaped across Nigeria and the United Kingdom — a perspective that moves naturally between African craftsmanship and contemporary global fashion.

Work with established fashion houses and bespoke tailoring rooms built practical expertise in pattern development, construction, fitting and finishing: the technical discipline behind a well-made garment.

Cultural influence is present not as costume, but as a living source of reference that keeps evolving through contemporary design.

Method

The creative process.

  1. 01

    Research

Reference, memory and material studies before a single line is drawn.

  2. 02

    Textile Selection

Cloth is chosen for weight, drape and how it behaves in movement.

  3. 03

    Design Development

Silhouette resolved through pattern, proportion and repeated correction.

  4. 04

    Garment Construction

Built by hand with the technical discipline of bespoke tailoring.

  5. 05

    Fitting

The body decides. Adjust, re-cut, refine until the garment sits quietly.

  6. 06

    Final Presentation

Styling, image and context — the garment placed into its own world.

Design begins with the garment itself.

Fabric

Chosen first. Everything else follows the cloth.

Cut

Line before decoration; nothing added that the shape does not need.

Proportion

Measured against the body, not the season.

Construction

Interior work held to the same standard as the surface.

Movement

A garment is only finished once it has been worn and walked in.

The Role

Building Frankincense.

Beyond individual garments, Nkem is building Frankincense as a global creative house.

Creative Collaboration

Fashion does not need to be loud to be memorable.

For Nkem, the future of African fashion lies not only in preserving where we come from, but in creating where we are going.
